Just wondering if the competition was open to non-uni competitors and if there was a rough date oon the cards for 2006?
best regards,

Hopefully we shall be homing in on the final details soon.... we will welcome outside participants in the games.
The original idea was that the new year one projects would be to build a competiton robot, and therefore we would have lots of participants.
However, the year one projet will not be based on the BEAM games now, but based upon building a different form of robot. We may still have some small competitions, but I need to find out how many potential competitors there are.
Regards

I think that based upon the fact that there may not be many first year projects to compete in a full competition, it would in fact be better to open the games up entirely to the rest of the UK.
If I am able to place a showcasing event on a weekend instead, then I think we could attract a lot of interest, not only from BEAM enthusiasts, but from Industry and other Universisties. I personally believe that the UK really does need something like this.
We could hold a small number of competitions, depending upon the numbers of other roboticists that have competiton robots, but we could also just show off our robots, talk about them in general, and discover whats going on in the UK.
I will open up the discussion to the BEAM community on Yahoo groups, and perhaps we will be able to organise an event. I am not sure how easy it will be, as I don't wish to sacrafice too much Uni work time.
All ideas welcomed on thi matter thou..... |

There's no reason why you can't run both an open Mini-Sumo along side a BEAM only to draw more competition in general.
For what it's worth I'd be happy to lend a hand on the day, York to Liverpool is an easy trip. Would have a micro based Mini-Sumo but intend to have a BEAM style hard wired 'bot soon.
When you've got a date fixed I'd be pleased to help promote it around the UK robot forums.
Aiming to have a competition towards the end of April, and probably again later in the year.
best regards,
